Mounting (see also ISO & E46 mounting)

Traffic Pro is exactly the same size as the stock unit for the Z3:

    • Personally, I think the Traffic Pro is MUCH better looking. It's Retro like the Z3, and MUCH more ergonomically designed for use in the car. The styling recalls the familiar analog car radios: a dial on either side, selectors on top and a row of pusbuttons like teeth below. The sound quality is also much improved over the stock unit. All the lower buttons and the knobs on either side are multi use buttons. e.g. when the radio is on, the lower buttons are your memorized stations. So even if it didn't navigate it would be a better looking better sounding unit than the BMW stock unit.

Note the different mounting device. Traffic Pro uses spring loaded clips and keys instead of screws to hold it in place.

    • Remove the BMW stock radio:
Start with the correct radio removal tool

This is the tool you need from BMW - it's about $15 (BMW CCA Discount)

You can also order a ground down allen wrech from Z3richard@aol.com (below)for $5.
    • The end of the tool is actually shaped like a pentagon, not a hexagon, thus a 49 cent hex key will not work
The end of the tool is actually shaped like a pentagon, not a hexagon, thus a 49 cent hex key will not work properly and will end up wearing down the release bolts until they are unusable. This is intentional on the part of BMW and will cost a lot to fix.

    • Here's the radio tool inserted into the radio. Keep turning clockwise (?) until you can't turn any more. Do the same on the other side.
The radio will now be released -- grab onto the knobs and gently pull out

    • Don't lose your chrome keys! The chrome keys fit in the tiny slots under the two big knobs on the face of the Traffic Pro and release it from the console, they also place the Traffic Pro back into the console. You have to press the spring loaded levers on each side to release the keys before you shove it the last inch into place.
